5 Fat-Torching Cardio Exercises That Are Better Than Treadmill

Losing stubborn body fat and getting into one's best possible shape may require at least some aerobic activity. While it is an essential part of any fitness program, it doesn't have to mean that you spend 30 minutes on the treadmill four times a week. In fact, if running isn't your thing, try these fat-torching exercises instead.

Swimming provides a great total body workout while burning a high number of calories. It is an exercise known for "torching calories" as well as "building up endurance" to enhance future performance. It is also a great option for those who can’t run or take part in some other forms of aerobic exercises as it puts no pressure on the joints, therefore, little risk of injury. Swimming vigorously for an hour can burn nearly 1000 calories.

Run the Stairs

Rather than mindlessly putting one foot in front of the other while watching a terrible comedy on the gym TVs, challenge your body’s proprioceptive awareness by running stairs. It will take a lot more concentration to get up and down repeatedly without falling, tripping, or running into anyone. You’ll work hard lifting your knees, bracing your core, moving your arms, and keeping your eyes peeled.

Cycling involves the same muscles as does running, but has the added advantage of being lower impact, therefore making it ideal for virtually anyone, with the exclusion of those with certain injuries. It can be done on either a stationary bike or on the road. Either of these approaches will suit almost anyone as the resistance can be changed to accommodate preferences in intensity level.

High-Intensity Interval Training

HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) is one of the newer and more effective ways to burn body fat. As many have experienced, HIIT provides an intensive aerobic option, which takes a fraction of the time to get your heart rate up compared to the more traditional cardio methods. However, HIIT may not be suitable for everyone, because it requires 100 percent of your focus and lots of coordination and core control for the move to be completed properly.

Dance cardio like Zumba is a pretty good moderate- to vigorous-intensity workout. Dancing is a full-body workout that targets every muscle group. When you dance, you move the body in different directions, so the wide range of motion activates small muscles and larger muscle groups. So, dance is definitely a great cardio workout to burn off that stubborn fat.

So remember…

  • The type of training and the methods used will differ from person to person. Any kind of aerobic exercise can make a difference. Find one that you can stick to for a long time. Consistency is what matters.
  • As with any form of training, aerobic exercise should be taken slowly during the initial stages of training. Training too hard too soon might result in injury or burnout.
